Individual Therapy

Individual Counseling, also called therapy, is the process of meeting with a therapist to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (sensations in the body). Beginning therapy can be a big step toward being the healthiest version of yourself and living the best life possible—no matter what challenges you may be facing. Using research-based models, I facilitate treatment for many life-interfering symptoms and behaviors such as the following:

  • Anxiety & Stress

  • Panic Attacks

  • Depression

  • Divorce

  • Grief & Loss

  • Eating Disorders

  • Addictions

  • Diagnosis-Specific Treatment

  • Abuse

  • Life-focus Issues

  • Career Counseling

  • Relationship Issues

Marital/Couples and Family Counseling

Marital and Family Counseling is a form of counseling that specializes in treating family relationships. While many people are familiar with individual therapy, family therapy works with a whole family unit or various relationships within a larger family system. How these relationships respond to one another is the focus of this kind of multi-person therapy. Common issues that family therapy addresses include:

  • Premarital and marriage therapy

  • Establishing family rules, roles, and expectations

  • Problems with communication

  • Dealing with family grief, loss, and transition

  • Working in a family-owned business

  • Managing conflict

  • Parenting issues and blended families

  • Problems with the emotional connection between family members

       & Family members with addiction

All of these issues can be addressed in counseling using research-based models of intervention. One of the problems associated with marital/couples/family counseling is that often there are one or more members of the family who may be reluctant or even refuse to participate in the therapy. However, there are counseling approaches that can lead to successful outcomes even in this situation.

Trauma is a distressing event in which a person feels severely threatened emotionally, psychologically, or physically. Most people will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives, such as a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, or a natural disaster. Many people recover from trauma with time and through the support of family and friends, bouncing back with great resiliency. For others, however, the effects of trauma are lasting, causing a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, stress, or behavioral dysfunction far after the event has passed. This condition is often referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD).

TREATMENT for trauma-related conditions or PTSD symptoms in my practice is fundamentally driven by brain-based research/techniques and/or a COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY (CBT) approach. This approach has been noted as the most effective treatment to help a person move forward into a more functional lifestyle.

Life/Career Growth & Development

Growth and Development counseling is a service offered to help and guide clients to a higher level of living. This is different from therapy in that the person receiving the services is not necessarily suffering from a mental health condition that requires an upper level mode of treatment. This service is sometimes referred to as “Life Coaching or Business Coaching” and it is for anyone who desires life enhancement through positive change. For example, clients who seek this type of service may want to reach goals in the following areas:

  • Health & Fitness

  • Business & Leadership Development

  • Financial Empowerment

  • Spiritual Growth

  • Parenting

  • Career Coaching

Life & Business Coaching draws from a range of methods. Typically, sessions will focus on setting goals, organizing and prioritizing those goals, problem solving, and breaking through the negative thought patterns and obstacles that prevent people from achieving their goals. This service is not simply “giving out advice”; but rather is an intuitive guidance approach, drawing from research studies which encourage new perceptions and insights leading to empowerment and success.

College and Career Exploration

As a Certified Guidance Counselor with experience in the school system, it is a joy for me to include in my practice counseling services aimed at helping people seek a better future through college and career exploration. This service often includes the following topics:

  • How to maximize high school experience to get into the college of your dreams

  • How to apply for college, scholarships, financial aid, etc.

  • Adulting 101…how to live independently in college and/or young adulthood

  • Safety education

  • How to manage stress

  • College majors and related careers

  • Job opportunities

I have found that there are many young adults who are leaving home and suffering from high levels of stress, anxiety and even depression. It is my goal to help all people, but particularly our younger generations, learn to live healthily and happily as they enter the adult world.

Special Populations Advocacy

In our society there are certain people who are at higher risk of being bullied and discriminated against due to special circumstances in their life experience. This could include LGBTQ populations or anyone who does not fall within the traditional norm. Other populations who are at risk are those with physical and mental disabilities and special needs. It is my pleasure to provide guidance, counseling and advocacy for people in these situations. This service is largely an effort in increasing resiliency and empowerment and minimizing the chances for self harm or suicide.

Support Groups

Periodically I provide free support groups for various populations. I also provide group therapy and other paid group services. I am willing to initiate a group if you feel there is a community need. Just call and let me know!
